Chocolate & Toxin Ingestion Rules
Theobromine and caffeine are methylxanthine compounds found in cocoa beans. Dogs metabolize theobromine much more slowly than humans. Toxicity begins at 20 mg/kg with agitation and vomiting; severe cardiac arrhythmias, tremors, and seizures occur at doses exceeding 40 to 60 mg/kg.
Reading Dog Food Ingredient Labels
Look for whole named animal proteins (such as deboned salmon or lamb) within the first two ingredients. Avoid generic poultry by-products, artificial food dyes (Red 40, Yellow 5), chemical preservatives (BHA, BHT, Ethoxyquin), and excessive pea or lentil fractions.
Calculating Daily Calorie Requirements (RER)
Canine resting energy requirement is determined by the equation: RER (kcal/day) = 70 × (Body Weight in kg)^0.75. Neutered adult small dogs require approximately 1.6 × RER, while active working dogs require 2.0 × RER.
Facial Tear Stain Porphyrin Oxidation
Reddish-brown eye and muzzle stains result from iron-binding porphyrin molecules excreted through tears and saliva. Saline eye wiping, switching from tap to filtered water, and using stainless steel bowls prevent bacterial catalyst growth.
